Towles Court
Located south of Ringling Boulevard just West of Hwy, 301 off Adams Lane is the artist colony of Towles Court. Towles Court was named after William B Towles, who took the land once owned by former Mayor John Gillespie with its 9 hole golf course and transformed it into a residential neighborhood. For decades the neighborhood thrived with professional and seasonal residents until the advent of the urban sprawl and shopping malls encouraged Sarasota to move outward. In the 1980s, N. J. Olivieri had plans to develop the neighborhood but was persuaded by others to develop an artist colony instead.
In the 1990s, artists started arriving at Towles Court, and the area’s cottage charm evolved.
The grounds of Towles Court Artist Colony are sprinkled with fountains, sculpture and tropical landscape. Winding paths lead to the doorsteps of cleverly painted enchanted bungalows, shops and professional residences. The neighborhood is also home to galleries, restaurants and thriving businesses.
